Simplified migrant e-registration guidelines (The Guideline) have been issued by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS). This is an update from the version published in June 2019.

Key highlights

• ALL migrants (any person who is a non-Nigerian, 18 years and over, who intends to stay in Nigeria for over ninety (90) days, must register with Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).
• All migrants are expected to register in their respective state of residence and declare the names of all their dependants.

Pre-registration

This optional web-based pre-registration website has not yet been released. So in person registration is currently the only option.

In-person registration

This is compulsory. All migrants must visit the e-registration centre in their state of residence with the relevant documentation as indicated previously. The registration process will be completed and biometrics taken.

Upon completion of the registration process, migrants will receive an acknowledgement slip with registration details.

ANY migrant who fails to register is liable to imprisonment for a term of three (3) years, or a fine of five hundred thousand Naira (N500,000) – or both!

Should a fee be charged?

The migrant e-registration is currently free! However, to avoid the queues you may be offered an opportunity to pay for an express service…with queues of up to six hours! You may take a view. Please note this is not a recognised “processing fee” and you are unlikely to receive a receipt.
